It's exactly 12:10 a.m. Monday morning. Normally, I'd be warm, cozy and sleeping well. Enter power outage. Enter a journalist's work. Car hits power pole. Pole splits. Equals no power. Equals a really annoying electronic device that is buzzing by it's battery life. Sleep anyone? I won't be needing any tonight!
The selfie project
So, I've decided to do a selfie project on Instagram. Yes, I know, I know. I'm almost 40 years old. Too old for that. It's self-centered. Blah blah. But I'm going to do it anyway and I assure you, it's not all about being vain. I have been following a couple of people on Instagram... Continue Reading →
‘Gravy mode’
Give me a minute: I have a confession to make. I live for "gravy mode." What is "gravy mode" do you ask? Let me explain. A few weeks ago I finally got a Fitbit, after a lot of encouragement from my friend, Susan, and my coworker, Jessie. Finally, I made the investment. And they were right... Continue Reading →
A frozen landscape and a dose of perspective
A frozen landscape and a dose of perspective.
A frozen landscape and a dose of perspective
We started the day today in the 30s -- and by sundown it was all of 14 degrees. After nearly 24 hours of steady rain, the sudden cold weather was such a beautiful gift, transforming the world from a slick, wet reflection to a frozen, depth-filled landscape. The pigeon is sick
The pigeon is sick. So far it's been a typical cold — with a side of frustration because I want to get out and wander. Ever since I started my journey to fitness and health, I'm one of the hardest people to keep down — and this weekend has been tough. All last week I... Continue Reading →

The great deep freeze
So lately the entire country has been hanging out together in a deep freezer. Really. It's cold outside! I will admit others are far worse off than us — our lows haven't been in the -20s but we've had wind chills that low. So, I searched Google Images and came up with some ideas to... Continue Reading →
‘Lady Brandy of Glencoe’
My new alter-ego is "Lady Brandy of Glencoe." I also own a little piece of Scotland — my own personal estate. Really, I have the paperwork to prove it. As I write this, it's 5 degrees Celsius or 41 degrees Fahrenheit at my estate in Scotland — balmy compared to Emporia's current 16-degree temperature. I... Continue Reading →
