As I sit at home gazing out the window, a lone sparrow landed in a hanging flower pot outside my window. I have not cleaned out the flower pot from last year so it contains old, dead flowers from last summer. The bird landed happily in the pot, chirping and singing his praises for spring. Upon second glance, however, I realized what he was really doing. He was gathering the dead plant material from my pot and taking it to build a nest.
All the sudden, the pot filled with dead plant material has a purpose. While it will be cleaned out in the next several days and filled with new flowers, right now, even with dry material, it is serving an important purpose. What once was colorful flowers, will now serve as the base for new life — a new nest.
What a wonderful concept. What a wonderful gift that bird gave me — the gift of a new perspective today. The reminder that even things that appear old, dry and dead all have a purpose.
So as I type, I’m thinking happily of spring.
Happy Spring. And Happy Easter my friends!
